Medication for weight loss can added to a supervised programme to achieve quicker results where this is indicated. Loss of weight by reduction in fat absorption has to date clinically only by means of a drug called Orlistat.

Its efficacy, safety and effectiveness in terms of morbidity and mortality have earned it a place on the UK National Health Service.

Orlistat works by reducing fat absorption from meals by up to 30 per cent. Enzymes in the intestines called lipases, which are involved in fat absorption are inhibited by Orlistat. Their ability to and enable absorption of dietary fat is rendered difficult.

The parent company, F. Hoffmann LaRoche, is actively promoting organised weight loss schemes and educational campaigns which are geared to achieve results when combined with the drug.
