We have mixed up all the determiners (a, an, the, that, this) from the text, try and correctly place them.
What to tell the doctor Part 1 (Teacher: Michael)
Do you get tongue-tied at
Select
that
an
this
a
the
doctor's? Do you dry up when you enter
Select
that
an
this
a
the
consulting room? What do you say when you sit down by
Select
that
an
this
a
the
doctor's desk?
Doctors have
Select
that
an
this
a
the
similar problem: what to say to patients. To start
Select
that
an
this
a
the
consultation with "How are you?" is just no use. Whenever I've tried
Select
that
an
this
a
the
opening gambit, "very well, thank you" has been
Select
that
an
this
a
the
instant response - followed by
Select
that
an
this
a
the
pause. Then
Select
that
an
this
a
the
embarrassed "Well no, I wouldn't be here if I was" "What is
Select
that
an
this
a
the
matter with you?"; is another non-starter from
Select
that
an
this
a
the
doctor's point of view. It brings forth
Select
that
an
this
a
the
reply: "That's what I wanted you to tell me!" or "You're
Select
that
an
this
a
the
doctor, not me. I don't know what is wrong."
Over
Select
that
an
this
a
the
years, I've opted for
Select
that
an
this
a
the
greeting such as, "Good morning, Mr Smith. What can I do for you?" Even
Select
that
an
this
a
the
goes wrong sometimes, but at least it leads to fewer hiccups getting
Select
that
an
this
a
the
consultative ball going backwards and forwards, from patient to doctor.
Many times, just as I think I've successfully sorted out their problem, my patient produces another one, like
Select
that
an
this
a
the
magician bringing rabbits out of
Select
that
an
this
a
the
hat, but these are different animals each time! At
Select
that
an
this
a
the
rate medical matters can be solved, only
Select
that
an
this
a
the
couple of them can be discussed before
Select
that
an
this
a
the
consultation runs out of time; and I'm conscious
Select
that
an
this
a
the
there are others waiting their turn, and getting worked up about their chat with
Select
that
an
this
a
the
doctor. Dilemma. What to do now?
If I curtail
Select
that
an
this
a
the
consultation abruptly, my patient will feel
Select
that
an
this
a
the
they have had
Select
that
an
this
a
the
raw deal, and
Select
that
an
this
a
the
Select
that
an
this
a
the
doctor doesn't care, or isn't interested.
