Few people realise just how effective the human body is at looking after itself. In nine out of ten illnesses, your body will get better by itself.
Your body contains an astonishing variety of mechanisms designed to repel illness and hasten recovery.
Here are some of the remarkable ways in which your body can help to keep you healthy - if only you will let it!
1. If you cut yourself, you will bleed. But after a few moments (just long enough to wash away any infection) the cut will automatically start to heal. Your blood will clot, and special white cells will move into the area to combat any remaining infection.
2. If you stay in the sun for a long time, your skin will get darker. The change in colour is produced as melanin-containing cells migrate to the surface. These special cells help protect your body against damage that might be done by the sun.
3. If you catch a cold, your body temperature will rise to kill off the bugs that are causing the cold.Teacher: Michael Many articles taken from 'A word with the doctor', by Dr. John Windsor.
