Start > Resource centre > Articles > Winding up the body clock Part 3

If you wake yourself up with your own snoring or always seem to start the day with a headache, it may be that you are suffering from some kind of sleep disorder, such as apnoea. Go and see your GP as it could be treated by a sleep specialist.

Frequent travellers should also remember that jet-lag can cause interrupted sleep and flying across time zones can throw out body clocks and usual sleep patterns.

This is caused by the nuclei in the brain which control the human body clock being thrown out of phase with real time because they react to light and dark. In different time zones, light and dark come at different times and send confusing messages to the nuclei.

Jet-lag is worse for people travelling east across time zones, for example from Los Angeles to London. It is best remedied by trying to avoid light in the mornings and seeking it out in the afternoons and early evenings for a few days to give your body time to re-adjust slowly.
