Blood clots Part 2 (Teacher: Michael)

When patient is put on anticoagulant, bleeding can give rise to some serious troubles. If patient has got brittle arterial system and artery ruptures in brain, bleeding will go on for long time and brain cells will 'drown' in blood.

Occasionally, patient on anticoagulants will pass blood in urine. In kidneys blood is only held in arteries by very thin membranes to allow passage through latter of unwanted materials. Blood with very prolonged clotting time can leak through these membranes and into urine.

All means when patient is given anticoagulants, careful check has to be kept on dosage and effect they have on clotting time or 'prothrombin' time. It necessitates blood sample being taken and sent to "lab" for testing.
