Some of the surgical interventions offered include cataract surgery, performed by using the latest equipment, squint surgery, retinal detachment surgery, as well as corneal transplantation, a procedure which to date is only performed locally at the eye centre. The most popular service recently is refractive surgery, a treatment internationally used to correct shortsightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism.

And with a relatively very high percentage of Maltese who wear glasses, it is no wonder that the procedure is fast becoming the talk of the town with spectacle bearers.

St James eye clinic, which is another department within the now renowned St James Hospital (which in the Nineties pioneered such treatments in Malta) has recently acquired a new laser machine, together with a whole range of state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment.

The centre is now introducing two new techniques (LASIK and LASEK) as regards refractive surgery, which provides a more accurate result and a quicker recovery with minimum discomfort as compared to the older generation of excimer lasers.

Prospective clients are invited to attend an information seminar every Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the clinic in Ghar il-Lembi Street, Sliema, where the personnel will explain in detail all the treatment's process.
