What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is name given to group of eye diseases in which optic nerve at back of eye is slowly and permanently destroyed. In most people damage is due to increase in eye pressure as result of number of causes. Perhaps blockage of circulation of aqueous humor, or its drainage, poor blood supply to vital optic nerve fibres, weakness in structure of nerve, and/or problem in health of nerve fibres themselves.
Glaucoma is second leading cause of vision loss in world and third in Australia amongst people over age of 55. It affects more than 300,000 Australians and similar to Type 2 diabetes only 50% of glaucoma sufferers know they have eye disease.
Although prevalence is more common as people age, it can occur at any age and even be present at birth.As our population becomes older, number of glaucoma patients is likely to increase.
