Start > Doctors > Reading > Articles > A rash complaint Part 1

Skin rashes are a common cause for worry among young mothers. Yet they are often nothing much to be concerned about. One of the most common rashes is probably the ordinary heat rash. Although this usually occurs in warmer weather, it can occur in the cold if a child is overdressed.

Heat rashes usually begin on the cheeks, shoulders, skin creases and bottom, and consist of tiny red spots. Blonde or red-headed children seem most likely to suffer.

The first thing to do is cool the sufferer by sponging with tepid water and removing some clothes. It is also useful to sprinkle a little powder onto the rash.

Nappy rashes are very common too. They tend to be red, rough and rather scaly. They're usually confined to the area covered by the nappy.

They are generally produced by the contact between the urine and the skin, but are sometimes caused by friction of skin against nappy.

Once a nappy rash has developed, it helps expose the rash to the air as much as possible. Most chemists will stock creams which can help relieve the itchiness for the baby.

Allergy rashes seem to be getting more common these days.
